About Planton

Planton Farm doesn’t believe in choosing between people, planet and profit – so it places all three at the centre of its regenerative approach.

Nestled among 80 acres of ancient trees and rolling pastureland in South Shropshire, Planton Farm has a vision to not only regenerate the traditional focus of farming – the ground – but to add to this the wide-ranging benefits of trees. Across their picturesque landscape, tree-planting is well underway to create wood-pasture, a rare diverse ecosystem. 

The engine of Planton is its herd of Aberdeen Angus cattle; pasture-raised, receiving no grain feed and finished on-farm. They’re managed using Holistic Planned Grazing to optimise productivity, soil health and biodiversity of the pastures. Alongside this, the farm is also home to chickens, including meat birds, laying hens and dual purpose chickens. 

When it comes to agroecological and regenerative livestock production, the Planton team is eager to demonstrate the art of what’s possible, having planted a one-hectare food forest (combining chicken foraging and food trees/shrubs) and putting in 25 acres of wood pasture as well as replacing a lost traditional orchard.

Education is a key strand on the farm with a pioneering regenerative agriculture training programme called Roots to Regeneration, co-founded by a member of Planton’s core team, Clare Hill.

Who?

Clare Hill has worked in the agri-food industry for over 20 years with large-scale businesses on their regenerative pilots and programmes, advising them on animal welfare, sustainability and the possibilities of a regenerative future for their business. Joining her is food systems and animal welfare specialist, Annie Rayner; recent Conservation & Countryside Management graduate, George Paton-Philip; and veterinary surgeon, food producer and sustainability consultancy founder, Ruth Layton.
