About Witherslack Estate
Witherslack Estate sits on the edge of the Winster Valley, bordering the river Winster to the west and Whitbarrow Scar to the east. The estate has a close relationship with the local community, and the surrounding parish has the largest percentage of permanently occupied homes in the whole of the Lake District.
Woodworkers and furniture makers on the estate use wood which is grown in the forests around them and processed on site, while their by-products are used to power the boiler system. The artists and makers often work together to organise exhibitions and fairs at Halecat House.
Witherslack Orchards manages 12 orchards of varying sizes, rejecting the use of chemicals and pesticides and actively encouraging wildlife to increase biodiversity over the land. The ancient orchards are stocked with local varieties of damson and apple trees, with a rare breed flock of Devon Closewool sheep grazing between them.
The team at Witherslack is currently rethinking the entire farmland strategy and the ways they use the land around them – so it’s a good time to be joining Pitch Up!.
“We wanted to work with Pitch Up! to help us connect with people and businesses around us who share our ethos and commitment to sustainability, while also discovering new ways to use farmland.”– Jack Stanley, Witherslack Estate
